There's been a virtual explosion of social networking websites in the past couple of years. Even the people like Google, Yahoo and MSN are receiving into it.

With so much curiosity about how social networks function, one begins to wonder if you have advertising potential within these social networks?

I joined partly because I wanted to see what they were, but more importantly to see on SEM what effect social network could have in the coming years.

I've been a part of numerous ser-vices for quite a while and the reach these sites have is amazing.

Like, from my LinkedIn network of eight people I've an extended network of over 12,600 people.

Imagine that - I am merely a click or two away from close to 13,000 other folks who share my related interests ranging from what I like to watch on TV to work I could offer for them.

Through their connections and my connections, I am attached to people including the American Cancer Society, to Sun Microsystems to the University of Texas to Google.

But what advertising possibilities are there for Social Media?

Well, let us examine MySpace.

MySpace is one of the top sites online today. It racked up 9.4 thousand page-views in August 2005 (over Google) and new users are signing up at a mind-boggling rate of 3.5 million per month. MySpace is typical of where todays 18-30 year-old visits manage their digital life. I'd like to give some examples to you. There are lots of artists who've gotten their start on MySpace. Simply by hosting a few of their music on the web and blogging about them-selves they developed a following. Soon they had record deals and contracts lined up.

Needless to say to-use services like MySpace you'll need to have some thing this target audience needs. If you don't then you probably should not put a lot of effort into MySpace.

But that does not mean other social-networking opportunities must be overlooked. As I stated earlier, LinkedIn is more of a specialist introduction service. If your product or service meets here then by all means investigate it further.

And there are the others also. Services such as Yahoo!s MyWeb, Flickr, http://del.icio.us and more.
